Nancy Drew

During my teenage, I remember that ‘abah’ used to buy me books. A lot of books from different types of books; comic, religious, cartoon, fairy tales and investigation series. Among the books, the most that I love to read again and again was the Nancy Drew series. It might be because of my ambition during that period was to be a detective or private investigator. She is kind, helpful and always at the right place at the right time (sometimes I wonder, why so much coincidence?). Her character is cheerful, brilliant, charming and intelligent. She’s also a very well dressed and good-looking girl.

Since I was really a ND fan, I bought my own library card so I can go and check out her books, which was not in my collection. When I was thinking about what I want to be, ND books inspired me so much and made me even be more confident to be a private investigator. J Whenever I was in a difficult situation, I just think, “what would Nancy do?” She made me feel like I can accomplish my goals if I just take them one step at a time, and of course include my friends to that situation to help me overcome the problem. Eventhough I don't become a detective, ND has made me me . From the ND, I had built up to be a person who loves to read books. The bad things is , I prefer books than newspaper.:P

YAL - My 1st Thought

Young Adult Literature (YAL)- It was quite frightening when I first time knew that I will have to take this subject this semester. It was not just about the lecturer, but also the word’ literature’. Honestly, I never ever had any experience in teaching and learning literature during my lifetime. As far as I concern, I always having difficulties to understand certain meaning in literature language, even the Malay version. And that will be the reason why this subject frightened me so much. But, things change.

The first question Dr.Edwin asked in class was ‘what is YAL?’ What comes across my mind about YAL was of course it has something related to short stories, novels and poems, which have a deep meaning and written for the young people, maybe from 13 to 20 years old. But later on I learnt from my friend that ‘literature is life’. Therefore, I can concluded that YAL is a kind of stories that are written to illustrate what are the young people real story of life. It also will let the readers to think of the moral of the stories that can be obtained from the literature itself. Thus, based on my understanding plus explanation from lecturer and friends, I perceive that literature is more than anything that I have pictured before. And of course it needs me to put a whole lot of effort for this subject.
